On Matsu Dongyin Island, black-tailed gulls can be seen almost all year round, but they belong to different groups; there are wintering groups, transiting groups, and breeding groups. The population that breeds on Dongyin Island is the only one in China, and it is also the southernmost population of black-tailed gulls known to breed in the world.
